Abstract

Energy saving has become a crucial priority across various sectors, including education. One step that can be taken is to implement technology to manage energy consumption more efficiently, especially concerning lighting. Lights in schools often remain on continuously, whether they are needed or when natural light is already sufficient. To address this issue, this research aims to design and implement an ESP32-based smart lighting control system at SMK Sasmita Jaya 2, in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce electricity waste. The developed smart lighting control system uses an ESP32 microcontroller, which features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities. This microcontroller acts as the brain of the system, regulating all lighting control functions. To detect environmental conditions, the system is equipped with light sensors and motion sensors. The light sensor is used to detect the intensity of light in the room, ensuring that lights only turn on if natural illumination is insufficient. Meanwhile, the motion sensor detects the presence of human activity in the room. If no motion is detected within a certain period, the system automatically turns off the lights to conserve energy. The use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology allows this system to connect with a smartphone application, providing remote control over the status of lights throughout the school's rooms. Users can turn lights on or off via the application and monitor the lighting status in each room. The application also allows for scheduling light operation, so lighting can be adjusted to the school's daily needs. This system also offers other benefits, such as increased comfort for students and teachers, as lights will only turn on when needed and will automatically turn off when there is no activity in the room. Thus, lighting usage becomes more efficient, environmentally friendly, and economical. Furthermore, this system serves as an example of technology implementation that can support the development of a technology-based and environmentally friendly school concept. Through this research, SMK Sasmita Jaya 2 has successfully implemented an ESP32-based smart lighting control system, which not only provides benefits for energy saving but also serves as a model for other schools in their efforts toward more efficient and environmentally friendly energy management. It is hoped that the results of this research can serve as a reference for the further development of similar systems in various educational institutions
